Elizabeth c.1754, acrylic on wood panel (16" x 20"), 2015-16
I re-worked this painting and finally feel ok with it. I was never really quite satisfied with the first version of it and the urge to fix it was always in the back of my mind.
This historical portrait is so different from the original that I almost feel the need to invent a title for it.
The original historical portrait is of Princess Elisabeth of Wales (1741-1759) when she was 13 years old.
She was a member of the British Royal family and was the sister of George III.
Her portrait was done by Liotard in 1754, five years before her death at the young age of 18 due to health problems (she was always a sickly child).
My portrait looks like an older version of Elizabeth if she had lived to adulthood, which was unintentional as I didn't know the background to this portrait when I made it. Kinda weird.

Whenever I think of a chair, I think of these drawings that I did many years ago when I was in my twenties. There were rather large drawings on 22" x 30" BFK Rives paper. The actual drawing wasn't as big as the paper.
For whatever reason, those drawings are stuck in my head because they were simple, but effective.
I did them for fun and not for anything else.
I did them for me and for no one else.
As one gets older, I've noticed that we forget the fun part and only concentrate on the "work" aspect of making art. It's a sad state of affairs when all that counts is technique and nothing more. I fight the urge to be too technical in my work because painting needs to be fun for me, otherwise why do it? It has to come out naturally and not be forced. It takes work to be good, but it also takes courage to let go.

This is the view from our bedroom windows.
Let's just say it's pretty cold out there today.
And it's going to be cold again tomorrow and the day after that. I'm not kidding.
Makes me think of the Antarctic or the North Pole. Either one will work in this situation.
It's kind of pretty and cool at the same time.
I've put the original artwork from that PSYCHO CAT zine that I made a couple of years ago for sale in my ETSY shop. These are tiny mini portraits on paper. Would look nice framed.

Here's a special face. I went off on a tangent and just did whatever. Didn't work from any reference image or magazine clipping. It's good to just paint and not think too much about the process. Or maybe there is a lot of thinking involved since I had to figure everything out on my own.
I like her teeth and the fact that they're not perfect. Only movie stars have perfect teeth.

It's already February!
2016 is shaping up to be another busy year. Not that I'm complaining.
I've been keeping a watchful eye on the calendar and have been trying to pace myself so that I'm producing new work in a continuous, natural flow and not staggered and compressed in short bursts as was the case last year because of the move and all that changing apartments entails for a family of four.
So far, so good.
The latest portraits that I've done have surprised me and I'm happy to say that I'm thrilled with the way they're coming out. I'm even reluctant to put some of them up for sale as I don't like to sell work too quickly and than come to regret afterwards. Sometimes, it's important to hold on to new artwork in order to have time to fully absorb them and learn from them. Also, I like to keep some paintings just for myself. An artist's prerogative, I guess.
